Looking like Iggy Pop and sounding like Neil Young covering the
New York Dolls, Vinny Peculiar, an ex-psychiatric nurse from Manchester
plays a melodious mix of Americana drenched in UK glam. His punk-poetry
style of delivery has been honed constantly for the past 5 years
on Manchester's inner city anti-folk circuit, with each song from
Vinny's vast library having their own extraordinary spoken word
introduction. Now backed by Mike Joyce and Andy Rourke from 80s
band the Smiths as well as his trusty Casio keyboard, Vinny's show
is fuller, louder and just as bizarre!
Just how did Vinny Peculiar manage to get the best rhythm section
this side of heaven to join his band? Well it goes a little something
like this . . . Andy and Mike saw Mr Peculiar performing at Manchester's
Kitchen-Sink Disco way back in January. Vinny's Bontempi-esque 'Council
Flat Cabaret' show got the former Smiths rhythm section so entranced
as wel as outraged that they all decided to form a band there and
then - just like that.
Managing to blag a rehearsal space up inside an old converted camera
obscura in Salford, Vinny Peculiar began writing the new album and
'peeping' through the observatory lenses for musical inspiration.
With glorious panoramic views of Manchester and Salford beaming
into the mock studio, Vinny's lyrics became increasingly voyeuristic;
songs like 'Two Fat Lovers' and 'Man About The House' make a sharp
about-turn from his previous guilt tinged albums 'Ironing the Soul'
and 'Growing Up With . . .' - instead of looking inward, they take
pleasure from the thrill of observation.
Vinny Peculiar has spent the last year performing with British Sea
Power, Malcolm Middleton and the Killers; hosting the Cathedral
Quarter Arts Festival in Belfast as well as joining his friend Bill
Drummond on their now infamous guerrilla soup attacks on the homes
of those living on the invisible geographic line between Nottingham
and Belfast. He has been crowned the 'Tony Hancock of pop' by Uncut
magazine for his bizarre but socially aware brand of glam-punk and
has a European tour lined up for November.
Vinny Peculiar has recently also been touring with TSOOL among others.
